JASON WOLFE

Jason Wolfe, real name Chris Bowskill was another ex Caroline North DJ and former colleague of Don Allen.

Little was revealed about the disc-jockeys who made their debuts on Radio Caroline after the passing of the Marine Offences Act. Not wishing to risk prosecution under the new law, it was felt wiser to keep a low profile. One of these men of mystery was Jason Wolfe. He joined Radio Caroline North in August 1967.

It has been reported that he was 25 years old and from South Africa but even this minimal information may not be correct.

Following his time with Caroline he was one of the instigators, along with Bud Ballou and Spangles Muldoon, of the landbased pirate Radio Free London and it was also reported that he was working as a croupier. In additiom, he wrote articles for Wavelength and Script Magazine, mainly promoting independent radio, but also some quirky stuff.

In 1969 he was sharing a flat with ex-Caroline jock Jumbo Jim Gordon (Guy Blackmore). They formed a company together called Orphean Honk, putting discos and dancers into London pubs. Jason himself did The Greyhound every Sunday lunchtime.

In 1972 he married his girlfriend Penny.

In June 1974 he briefly returned to sea when he joined Radio Northsea International off the coast of Holland.

Unfortunately his on-air style was not appreciated by station boss Edwin Bollier and he only stayed a month.

In 1976 he & Penny moved to San Francisco and Jason freelanced with PBS Radio and had a weekend slot on KALX, the local Berkeley University radio station. He wrote articles for local publications, mostly on a variety of nutty stuff and some poems too. They returned to the UK in 1983 with a son and a daughter. BBC Radio Reading actually interviewed Jason live on air about the Radio Caroline Days, which is a bit of a turn around. He worked for Radio Thamesmead back in London and did film-extra work, whilst taking a years course at the City Lit in drama. He had lots of small character-parts in film and TV and a couple of TV commercials. He lectured regularly to the police on how to handle radio and TV interviews, and was actually leading quite a stable life at this point! Then his health started failing and in 1986 he died of cancer.
