LARRY TREMAINE

Prior to coming over to Europe, Larry Tremaine was on radio in his native USA at XERB a "border blaster" from just across the Mexican border in the late 60's. This station was owned by the legendary Wolfman Jack

In 1970, Larry was employed by the Mebo organisation in 1970 as its Managing Director.

His first broadcast on RNI was on June 12, 1970.

Andy Archer describes Larry's arrival: "While the ship was anchored off the Essex coast we first met the now infamous Larry Tremaine, "The Geeter with the heater" Tremaine. T’was a bracing morning when a Swiss-registered Mercedes had the affront to pull into Brightingsea harbour, and then load a few supplies, and Larry Tremaine, into a clapped-out shrimp boat which then made its way out to the Mebo II. Larry was to be our new programme director… Whoopee!"

Larry presented a weekly programme, as Rob Eden explains: Every Sunday Larry Tremaine came out in the afternoon and interrupted normal programming to do his own "American style" show. Every weekend, because Larry couldn’t operate a panel properly, I used to sit at the panel while he shouted at the microphone."

Andy Archer recalls another memory of Larry, during the infamous "Kees Manders" affair on August 12, 1970: "Perhaps the most heartening sight of the day was to see our little tender ship speeding out towards us with Larry Tremaine sporting a red Mickey Mouse Tee shirt!" (In a recent email to Hans Knott, Larry cliams to still have that T Shirt!)

Larry stayed with RNI until the station closed in September 1970.

Nothing was heard of him until recently when he contacted Chris & Mary Payne (check out their Radio London website) and Hans Knott and informed them he was involved with his wife running an art gallery in California.
