MARK SLATE

Dee Harrison (Mark Slate) first appeared on the offshore scene in 1967, when just ahead of the Marine Offences Act (August 15th) there were major staff changes at Radio Caroline as established deejays left rather than risk prosecution and newcomers took their place. Because of the new legislation, there was an air of secrecy and little was known about them. Dee was one of these new broadcasters and all that is known is that he was a 21 year old whose home town is Wallasey in Cheshire. Dee joined Caroline North, but only stayed with the station for about six months.

He was working as a Club DJ in the Liverpool area and was a former colleague of Don Allen, and it was Don's connections that saw his offshore career resume in December 1972 when he joined Radio Northsea International. Here he broadcast as Mark Slate a name taken from the sixties TV series The Girl from UNCLE. Mark Slate was the lead male character played by Noel Harrison. His stay on RNI wasn't very long. His first programme was the "Skyline" show in the early hours of December 16, 1972, whilst his last live show went out on February 15, 1973. He did, however, record a final programme before leaving the boat and this was broadcast on February 23, 1973.

He gave the reason for his departure as having been accepted for another job for which he had applied months earlier. (whatever that was!)

And that's it. If you know anymore or have a picture of Mark, I'd love to hear from you. My email address is colin@quizquest.fsnet.co.uk
