PAUL MAY

American Paul May joined Radio Nothsea International in mid August 1971 and was very quickly appointed Programme Controllers, as Mike Ross explains:

Well, Paul May walked into the Naarden studios looking for a job. John de Mol Sr, who was our Dutch boss at the time and managed both Dutch and English services, asked me to interview him and see how good he was as a deejay. We actually made him programme director mainly because we didn't want the responsibility of running the station ourselves.

However, first thing he did was to stop us broadcasting, and to fire Dave Rodgers completely, who left the station.

He did that because we didn't agree with what he wanted to do. Paul wanted to introduce to the station what we nowadays call the Mid-Atlantic format and we didn't want to do that. We were more European than that and wanted to be ourselves.

Paul's final programme for RNI was on July 29, 1972.

He re-appearred in the 1980s on Laser 558 (and then Laser Hot Hits), using the name of Paul Dean. In the late 80s he returned to the States.

In his December 2002 report, Hans Knott stated: "We received an email from Paul May. He still remembers RNI as the best years in radio. He also has good memories of his days on Laser. He totally quit radio and these days works in a pub annex brewery near Cape Canaveral, in Florida. He feels very settled & is proud to have raised a family  & is now a grandfather.
